YXL at Horn Creek – July 1-8, 2017 at Horn Creek, CO
Ever feel like you don’t belong? Or your friends just see the world differently? Our theme for YXL Horn Creek 2017 is “Exiles,” taken from 1 Peter 2:11. Peter is writing to “those who are elect exiles” – Gentile believers in what is today Turkey. These people had felt at home in greco-roman culture until recently. Now they’re strangers in their own homeland. Here’s what Peter says to encourage them:
“But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for his own possession, that you may proclaim the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy.
Beloved, I urge you as sojourners and exiles to abstain from the passions of the flesh, which wage war against your soul. Keep your conduct among the Gentiles honorable, so that when they speak against you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day of visitation.”
1 Peter 2:9-12
This summer our evening speaker Ben Coppedge will open up this idea for us – what does it mean for us to live and love here but be citizens of another kingdom? It’s the same thing the Israelites faced when they were taken into exile in Babylon – they were tempted to weep by the river, but God charged them to “seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare.”
“Sunday school” answers fall short – this is hard and messy. It’s rarely black and white. Ben will help us see how we can embrace our calling as exiles, to bring the hope of a better kingdom and a better king to a broken world.
YXL Northeast – July 9-14, 2017 at Kenbrook Bible Camp in Lebanon, PA.
Our theme this year will be “GOD’S RENEWED PEOPLE: Leadership in Light of Renewal.” Our main speaker will be Joe Slater, RUF Pastor at James Madison University. Joe will be leading us through the book of Ephesians as we look at how being renewed as God’s people drives us towards community and a common mission. We will see how God’s grace and His goodness intersect to create an army ready to go to battle against the powers and principles of this world.
What can you expect at YXL Northeast? The unexpected!
YXL is designed to be an intensive conference for leadership development. As such, every aspect of the week is leveraged to create leadership learning opportunities. Students can expect to have their presuppositions challenged, their faith stretched and their comfort bubbles popped. Whether it is an activity with a twist, a Bible study that cuts to the quick, or a conversation that empowers, the only things that student leaders can expect are the unexpected and that God will grow their faith if they allow Him to work! While the week is challenging, it is also full of fun. We are a family at Northeast and you’ll quickly see why. Family group discussions provide opportunities for evaluation and reflection as well as create a space safe for building trust and going deep.
